2009 Morris Ranch Pinot Noir

MORRIS RANCH
2009 "Reserve" Pinot Noir, Sonoma Coast

90 Points - Affairs of the Vine
Gold Medal - Affairs of the Vine

One of the difficult things about sourcing wine in California is that for the most part, by the time the wines have reached their ideal drinking window, they are long since sold-out.  Since most people don't have a huge amount of space for cellaring, this means that most wine gets drunk too young.  For this reason, whenever we see a wine with some age on it that is showing beautifully today, we jump on it.  And if that wine happens to come from a great vintage, so much the better.  At five years of age, the 2009 Morris Ranch Pinot Noir is hitting its stride, and we are delighted to have been offered an allocation.

The 2009 Morris Ranch Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir come from hillside vineyards in the Petaluma Gap region (a sub-region in the Sonoma Coast, which is seeking official AVA status), where cool wind and fog from the Pacific Ocean race in through a gap in the coastal hills.  Pale to medium garnet in color, this shows classic pinot aromas of cherry and dried cranberry, along with a dusty, leathery component that is starting to develop with age.  The palate shows more cherry, with red currant, dried herb, and a spicy, gamey component on the finish.  Lighter in body with good acidity, this wine shows lovely savory characteristics and will appeal to fans of lighter to medium bodied Pinot.
