Sojourn
2019 Chardonnay
, Sangiacomo Vineyard
Sonoma Coast

93 Points - Owen Bargreen

Aromas of fresh baked bread, shades of kumquat zest and spice come together in the glass.  The palate has marvelous texture and mouthfeel, leading to a full-bodied apple pie, brioche, honeysuckle, toasted almond and lemon cream flavor.  A rounded and mouth-filling finish shows off this beautiful vintage that will cellar well for the next 7+ years.

Winemaking
The 2019 vintage was slightly lower yielding, which resulted in greater concentration in the wines. Balanced structures and rich flavors are consistent throughout the 2019 vintage wines. The individual Sangiacomo vineyard components were harvested on separate nights and delivered to the winery early in the mornings. They were immediately whole-cluster pressed and barreled down into French oak barrels for fermentation in a temperaturecontrolled cold room. 2019 offers robust aromas and rich textures with balanced acidity.

Vineyards
The core of our Sojourn Sangiacomo Vineyard Chardonnay is from the same vineyard source as the highly-acclaimed Sojourn Sangiacomo Vineyard Pinot noir wines. This wine features a combination of Clone 95 Chardonnay from Sangiacomo Roberts Road Vineyard and Old Wente Clone from Sangiacomo Vella Ranch and Green Acres. The Roberts Road block, planted in 1998, provides minerality and vibrancy. The Old Wente Clone selections are known to produce distinctively small clusters, low yields, and result in elegant, complex wines that round out this blend. These ranches are perfectly suited for growing Chardonnay, with cool climates and well-draining soils.

Vintage
The 2019 vintage was similar to 2018 in that the mild season allowed for long and slow maturation. The lack of major heat waves and virtually no rain during harvest allowed us to pick every vineyard block at optimal ripeness.
