At WineHeist we often offer hidden gems that have flown under the radar for whatever reason, and not received the critical acclaim that their quality deserves. But from time to time we also taste big scoring wines from well known winemakers, and when we can offer these wines to our customers at a great discount, we love to do that as well. Today’s Heist is a little bit of both worlds, as we offer the 2007 JC Cellars Rockpile Syrah. JC Cellars is known to people who follow California wine closely, and has been lauded by dozens of 90+ scores. And Owner/Winemaker Jeff Cohn is also known for crafting many high scoring wines for Rosenblum Cellars, where he was winemaker for many years. Today’s offering is another winner from Cohn, scoring a 91 from Parker and an astounding 94 from the Wine Spectator. Wines like this usually sell out to the mailing list immediately at full price, so don’t miss out on the chance to grab this one at a great discount.
The 2007 JC Cellars Rockpile Vineyard Syrah is inky purple in color, with a monster nose of blackberry, blueberry, and leather. The palate is juicy and ripe, with more black and blueberry accompanied by hints of a vanilla and smoked meat. This wine beautifully walks the line between lush and vibrant, with a stunningly long, creamy finish that shows layers of primary fruit alternating with spice. This is California Syrah at its finest, showing plenty of Syrah character, but with the bright fruit flavors that are sometimes lacking from less ripe versions of this variety. While this is more expensive than most California Syrah, one taste is all that it takes to see why; you simply don’t find this level of concentration and intensity in lower priced wines, and to get the same experience from a Napa cab would easily cost twice as much. This is that rare case in which an expensive wine truly offers value!
