GOLD MEDAL - Winemakers Challenge Wine Competition
We had such a great response to our offering of the 2007 Hagafen Cabernet Franc over the summer that we couldn’t wait to try more of their wine. While all of the wines we tried were lovely, the 2007 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was our clear favorite. This estate offering is sourced from the same outstanding property in Southeastern Napa as their cab franc, where slightly warmer temperatures combined with old-school minimalist winemaking combine to create impeccably balanced wines with remarkable finesse.
The 2007 Hagafen Estate bottled Napa Cab Sauvignon, from one of Napa’s best vintages of the decade, is light purple in color. The nose shows classic Cabernet aromas of crème de cassis and tobacco, with a hint of candied cherry. The palate is delicately layered with blackcurrant, anise, caramel and a fine mineral streak. Lush tannins and good acidity provide a long, pleasing finish. The final blend had 11% cabernet franc blended in to round out the palate, and at just 13.7% alcohol, this wine is perfect for fans of Old World wines looking for an equally elegant California wine. Generous acidity makes this wine very versatile, pairing with nearly any medium to full flavored dish you can dream up. Aged for 19 months in small French and American oak cooperage, their Cabernet Sauvignon will flourish with bottle age. A wonderful wine from California’s premier Cabernet region at $45, this represents a bargain not to be missed at just $36!
