At WineHeist we are constantly scouring California and beyond for new and exciting wines to bring to our customers. When we find one from one of the producers we know and trust, we are even more excited to bring it to our clients and share in the savings. This week we revisit our old friend Eberle, a pioneer in Paso Robles fine wine production, and a somewhat unusual wine from them, a 50/50 blend of Cabernet and Syrah. While this blend is common in Australia, we don’t see it too often here in California, which is a shame because these two varietals seem to be natural partners. The Cab brings plenty of blackberry and leather aromas, while the Syrah offers juicy fruit and earthier notes. The result, especially in a classic vintage like 2007 is a beautifully harmonious, unique wine.
The 2007 Eberle Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah exhibits a wonderfully saturated dark purple color. The nose is stunningly complex with aromas of blackberry, blueberry, plum, vanilla and potpourri playing off one another. Equally dark black cherry, currant, blackberry, and smoky vanilla flavors combine on the palate, with a lush, smooth finish. Chewy tannin, rich flavors and a long finish suggest that this wine will last for a long time in the cellar, and while its drinking well now it will certainly improve over the next 3-5 years, and perhaps beyond. Stock up now, and break this one out over the coming years when you want to knock your friends socks off!

In 1973, Gary Eberle began his career in the wine industry by heading his family’s Estrella River Winery (currently Meridian Vineyards in Paso Robles) and produced 500,000 cases a year at its facility. Eberle’s pioneering spirit didn’t stop there. In 1980, he co-founded the Paso Robles Appellation and in 1983, Gary opened the doors to his own Eberle Winery with the premiere of Eberle’s 1979 Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, Eberle handcrafts 25,000 cases of wine each year from surrounding Estate vineyards. And, after more than 25 years since the release of the Eberle label, the winery consistently remains one of the highest award-winning wineries in the United States.
The German name "Eberle" translates to "small boar." At Eberle Winery, a bronze boar greets every guest who visits the Tasting Room. The statue is the 93rd replica of the original bronze Porcellino cast by Tacca in 1620. And today, the original can be found in the straw market in Florence, Italy. It is considered good luck to rub the boar's nose and toss a coin in the water below. All money collected at the Eberle boar fountain is donated to local children's charities.
