2006 Roy J. Maier Cabernet Sauvignon
91 Points- Wine Spectator
90 Points- Stephen Tanzer
Over the last few years we have offered a variety of different styles of Cabernet Sauvignon from different areas of Napa and Sonoma, as well as other appellations in California. One area that has consistently delivered for us has been Spring Mountain, which seems to combine the depth of mountain Cabernet with the richness of warmer climates. While most of these wines have come from the Napa side of Spring Mountain, the mountain itself actually serves as a boundary between Napa and Sonoma, and today's offering comes from just on the other side of the peak, on the Sonoma side. This is great, because while the terroir is roughly similar, you avoid paying a Napa premium, thus this week's outstanding Cabernet for under $40!
The 2006 Roy J. Maier Cabernet Sauvignon, the top cuvee from St. Helena Road Winery, is inky purple in color, with a tinge of ruby at the rim. The nose shows classic Cabernet aromas of cassis, black cherry, vanilla, and violets. The palate is loaded with flavors blackberry, chocolate-covered cherries, and pipe smoke. Intensely concentrated, with a rich, deep finish that goes on and on, this is definitely a Cab for fans of the big, bold California Cabernets that populate the wine list at America's greatest steakhouses. This 2006 wine seems to be hitting its prime right now, with velvety smooth tannins yet no loss of fruit, and should drink beautifully for the next few years. For the hedonists out there, this is the one you have been waiting for!

About The Winery...
Roy’s grandson, and a member of Roy J. Maier Corporation’s Board of Director’s, Richard Maier, and his wife Patty, have taken their passion for wine and along with their two sons Ryan and Danny, purchased 60 acres in the Mayacamas Mountains. Located on the West side of Spring Mountain, the Sonoma side, they have established the vineyards that supply the grapes for the winery. Richard spent nearly 20 years in the research and development of cane plantations for the reed company and their farming operations. The ‘Roy J Maier’ label, blends the juices from the grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, into a kaleidoscope of flavors, aromas and colors; offering a wine to thoroughly savor, from your first sample of the bouquet, to your last satisfying sip.
In addition to the vineyards and winery facility, the Maier’s have developed the main Estate Home on the property, as a luxury vacation rental, providing the guests to the Napa/Sonoma wine region, with a unique opportunity to experience the premium wine country from their spectacular, mountain vineyard property.
